The Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois awarded the following students the 2020 Fotios Litsas Scholarship based on their academic excellence and contributions to the Hellenic community.

michael evangelopoulos

Michael Evangelopoulos
Biomedical Engineering,
Northwestern University

Michael is currently is a graduate student at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Prior to pursuing his graduate degree, he received a Biomedical Engineering degree at the University of Houston. Currently, he is getting his PhD in Biomedical Engineering and is involved on campus by serving as the President of the McCormick Graduate Leadership Council, Advocacy Chair of the Graduate Student Association, Internal Relations Chair of the Graduate Leadership and Advocacy Council, and Ambassador of the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Students.

"As a professional, my goal is to continue contributing to my Hellenic Heritage. I plan to do this by partaking in mentorship opportunities for aspiring science and engineering students. I believe it is important for us to continue working towards establishing ourselves as role models for the next generation so they, too, can aspire towards their own greatness."

stephanie garoufalis

Stephanie Garoufalis
Speech and Hearing Science,
University of Iowa

Stephanie is currently is a undergraduate student at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. She is studying Speech and Hearing Science and minoring in Psychology and works as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for the Department of Psychological Brain Science. Her other involvements include the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, Orthodox Christian Fellowship and the Chi Omega Women's Fraternity.

"Being a member of the Hellenic Community has instilled a sense of pride in me. Through my church attendance, I have not only learned about our true faith, but the importance of giving to others, seeking forgiveness and being grateful for everything God has provided to us."

The Hellenic Professional Society of Illinois wishes continued success to these recipients and the other candidates of the 2020 Fotios Litsas Scholarship as they pursue their careers! Special thank you to the donors of the HPSI scholarship fund for their generous contributions.


Scholarship donations are accepted throughout the year. Contributions can come from local businesses, members of HPSI and from the Hellenic community-at-large. To perpetuate the program and increase the amount and number of scholarships in the future, HPSI created the HPSI Charitable Foundation. This foundation, created in 1999, is a 501c-3, tax-exempt corporation under the laws of the State of Illinois. Donations to this fund, whether monetary or securities-based, are tax-deductible.

Those donating $1,000+ will have the opportunity to present their scholarship at the Spring Professional Panel & Scholarship Event. The donor will also be an honored guest of HPSI. The scholarship will be named after the donor or the person of their choice.
